Where Have You Been All My Life?

Admittedly, we see some pretty unusual stuff at HC. Between us, Mark, Jim and I have been working around bikes for quite some time so usually, there is not much that surprises us. Today was different. We got to see this:

It's a Suntour derailleur mounted on a Schwinn Criss Cross. It's bolted to a braze on on the chain stay and there is some kind of a guard mounted to the standard derailleur hanger. It seems to work well but its an odd design -- not sure what it accomplishes.

The daughter and I went down to Midwest Mountaineering for their annual spring sale to see if we could score any cheap stuff. We failed miserably on that point but did see some interesting folks and ran into a friend or too. On the way out, the sky was clearing to the west over downtown Minneapolis, and I took this from atop the U Parking Deck. I wish it meant warm, clear weather but they are talking snow flurries this weekend.

Cheers

Whoa! At about three o'clock this afternoon somebody donated what the exact same model Schwinn with the same derailler to my shop, Bike Works, here in Seattle. It's an odd world we live in!

That is bizarre. I love Suntour derailleurs and use them regularly. This one surprised me.

That's basically a clone of the old Nivex derailleur, however lacking the self-centering quality that was afforded by the springless continuous cable arrangement used by Nivex. Sun Tour produced this about the time they were going belly-up. Coincidence?

Perhaps the extreme angle leading into the cog meant more tooth engagement and less likelihood of skipping? Because with mighty legs like mine I'm forever ripping cogs to shreds you know.
